"The Cables may be ran on TOP of ceiling joists if the attic above is not used for storage. You may drill the ceiling joists as long as they are not beams or premanufactured, trusses. I joists and web joists have holes or knockout holes for you to run you wires.

Hope this helps

Does this apply if it's a new detatched garage with the middle part of the trusses being used as attic storage space. Can I run the romex on top the truss on either side of the attic storage space where there is no flooring? It's for garage door opener recepticles...

Yes that area not designed for storage may be wired on top of the joists. Most often this is the low side of the attic area where you would have to crawl and is not floored for storage design.

hey, thanks for the quick response!

so would i need to put runner boards on either side of the romex to protect it? It'll be on top of the insulation and i was thinking of making a run parallel to the attic floor about 2" away...i looked in the nec 2002 book but it didn't seem real clear to me.

i'm sorry, i meant the run will be about 2 feet away from the flooring, running parallel to the flooring the length of the garage.

Running boards are required in crawl space floor joists or basement ceilings also serving as floor joists. The Romex in these cases are hanging on the bottom side of the framing members. Attics the wires are laying on top of the framing members. Attics running boards are not normally installed.

Good Luck
