hello my fellow computer junkies,
i have got a good one for you guys. to get them liitle computer brains to working. here goes,
i have got a hp pavilion that the motherboard is shot. it is of the atx form factor. now what i am needing to know, is what other boards will fit in this system the correct way? not sure of the measurements on it, was hoping you may know. it don't matter the specs on the board or anything as far as cpu and ect. i will decide on that later after i determine which boards will fit. so sit back and get them liitle brains a working, and see if you can help me out on this one. lol p.s. this is a mini tower. not sure of height or anything. like i said. it is a pavilion 4450. thanks in advance guys for the help. merry christmas to you and yours. Not all motherboards will fit , if you keep the same case/tower , then the motherboard will need be meant for that tower to match up with the slots / holes to the outside. Certain brands of computers are proprietary systems in that only their brand of replacement / add on parts such as hard drive / cpu /memory will work, but once you replace the motherboard you really don't have an hp anymore, and may be able to use generic replacement parts with the new board. CPU / momory and motherboard must be compatably matched. Some computer mfg'ers put a recovery partition on their hard drives that contain the system install files and drivers, which is for the hardware that came with the system. Restore cd's that came with the system may not install correctly using a non /different motherboard signature.
Your hard drive, cd rom, floppy, are likely still ok, if the sound & video are separate plug in cards , they may be ok, if they on intergrated on the motherboard, then they of couse are gone with the motherboard. Be sure that the motherboard is indead shot, and it is not a power supply failure.
The answer to rather another motherboard will fit, will depend on what type of motherboard you get, motherboards with intergrated sound / video may need a different case than a motherboard that uses only plug in cards. Intergrated ones will require a case with a different layout of outside holes to match up.
As far as tower cases go, replacement towers caes run from $ 40 up, with power supply, it is not the tower that is the big cost, it is the motherbaord / memory / cpu are the major items. Your existing memory (assuming it is okêlly don't have an hp anymore, and may be able to use generic replacement parts with the new board. CPU / momory and motherboard must be compatably matched.
