I have used motor guide since the 70s. The first motor guide trolling motor I bought is still owned by me and still works. Problem is it was 12 volt not sure of the thrust rating but when I came around a point in a lake into the open lake to buck the wind many times my boat went backwards. The wind outpowered the trolling motor. This adds to frustration and more work for the one operating the boat while fishing.
The motor guide I have now I like. I had it on a 15' Skeeter and now it is on a 21' Nitro. It is 83 pound thrust with technology as an energy saver. What this does is cycles the motor on and off much like a one way AC power would do only using the upper part of the sign wave coasting the lower part of the sine wave powered DC but a bit of AC technology involved. This can save as much as 50% drain on the battery allowing much longer use of the trolling motor than we used to have.
My fishing buddy asked me if I was trying to ski behind my trolling motor with such a have thrust rating of 82 pounds. Advantage I experienced was that I could face any wind with ease on the lake. Also when my old Merc failed the first day at the Canadian border due to a failed electronic ignition module taking a long drive to get the part I fished the entire week in the medium sized lakes around Orr not even missing my gas motor. That trolling motor even ran me several times to the other side of the lake dead heading and at dark still had power to go.
I am happy with this model Motor Guide 82 pound thrust 24 volt only varispeed with high speed instant switch. I use all the features and enjoy fishing with it.
Just my opinion

Wg the only reason I threw the question out there is because the nearest service centre for minkotta is 600mils away from my home town, and worse for the neighboring provinces, so I thought I would apply to become a service centre and there is a large amount of up front money involed so I am just trying to get a feel as to the most popular units, as far as I know there seems to be more motor guide around my neck of the woods.
I run a 48lb minkota, power steer the unit has served me well the only thing that I don'nt like about it is the slow reaction steering while operating at 3/4 to full power, and it will drain battey a little quicker.
Just dont see me investing $5000.00 and have to wait 3 years to see a 1% return.

I have had boats since I was 16, 59 now. Only owned 3 trolling motors and three new bass boats, 2 skeeters and one nitro. Never had to have one of my trolling motors worked on. If I were you I would ask for a history of just how many trolling motors have been worked on in your service area. May help in your decision. Now if you could get a francise working on outboard gas motors you would have a concern of being overworked.
