I have a separate heating zone on gas fired hot water heating system in 1887 house. The plumber cut in a separate zone for a new powder room & the kitchen. I have a leak where the PEX is coupled to the copper for the bathroom heater. The connection is in the basement and there is ready access.

I turend off water flow to zone and unscrewed the connection - brass garden hose style nut on the PEX and male garden hose threaded connector on the copper.

Using a flashlight, I cannot see a washer inside the brass nut. The leak is water dripping from around the PEX... near the nut.

Should there be a washer? Made from? Some kind of plumber's goo?
The nut does not just slip off the PEX. Thanks.
