View Full Version : Sump Pump Runs Constantly, Can't connect hose

As the snow starts to melt, my sump pump runs constantly. It comes out of the house and drains back down and fills it up right away. I live in North Dakota, so it gets warm enough to melt during the day, but freezes at night. If I connect a sump pump hose, the water will freeze in the hose at night and blocks the flow and makes it worse. Last fall, I was constantly hooking up the hose when I got up in the morning, and unhooking it and draining it at night before I went to bed. I've tried filling the hole with dirt, but the blast of water coming out of the house just creates a new hole.
Any ideas?

Does your house have an alternate drain that could be used to run the hose to?
the next option would be to bury the hose so it doesn't freeze (approx. 6' deep, depending on area) but you still need an outlet for the hose somewhere. Preferably run it a on a downward slope so the hose will drain naturally after the sump stops.

Try installing your hose and cutting a hole about a couple of feet from the house so the hose can drain back through that hole when it shuts off. It will limit the water close to the house but allow the water to drain when shut off to protect from freezing at night. The one hole will drain the hose but when pump is running only a small amount of water is going through that small hole you made most of the water will be piped away from the home.
Just an idea
