View Full Version : Lonely Neutral OK?

I have recently installed a standby generator for my home and have attached the transfer switch to the panelboard using the two-foot long pre-wired conduit that is part of the transfer switch.

From reading the 2002 NEC it seems that I don't have to use any special adjustments to this type of connection because it is two feet or less of a conduit? There are ten - 12 AWG conductor wires, two - 4 AWG panel feed wires, one - 6 AWG neutral and one - 6 AWG ground.

If everything I have said so far makes sense my question is:

I have a bedroom circuit that I need to replace one of the 15 amp CB's that came in the transfer switch with an AFCI type but I'm wondering if with all of the wires that already fill the 1 1/4 inch conduit and there is still room without forcing or binding any existing wires can I pull the neutral, that is required for the AFCI CB for this circuit through to the transfer switch?

If you don't think I should pull anything but the "factory" installed wires into this conduit and I install a small secondary conduit am I allowed, by code, to just run this lone neutral through it or am I better off running both wires for this circuit through the new conduit?

I would really appreciate your opinion. Thanks for the help.

YOu should be fine at 60% fill for a nipple less than 24" long to add you extra wire.

However if you opt to run the neutral in a second conduit remember all conductors of a certain circuit whether a feeder or branch circuit must be contained within the same conduit. If you run that white wire in a new conduit Code requires the hots and grounding to be moved to that conduit that also serve that circuit.

Good Luck
