I want to buy one of those portable gens for camping but I don't know which kind. I want one that isn't loud at all and do I have to put a ground rod in for one of those things, I think that would be a PIA if so. Thanks for the help. :)

A portable genny with receptacles does NOT require a ground rod.
As always, Honda is your best bet. I used to use one of the small inverter units, the 2000 watt model. You could have a regular conversation with the thing sitting on the ground in front of you.
I think Yamaha, Makita and others are making similar units now.
Stay AWAY from Coleman in my opinion.

The Honda one sounds pretty darn neat. I was looking at one that ran at 60 dcb and that seems quiet. Thanks for the input.

hehe.... my friends use an older one and have added a pipe to the exhaust and have it extend down to and into a pail of water. they cut the lid so the pipe extends through, and there's room for the exhaust to escape. they say you can't hear it at night when parked 50 ft away.
