Hi, I have a few questions and hoping someone can answer them for me:

First, I'm installing a pop up (one where you can click in down to close or click it again to open) drain in an existing tub. I took out the old one. I purchased a new one to install.

Between the actual hole in the tub where the drain hole is, and the new metal round piece that glues to the tub, there is a black rubber piece on the new piece that will go between the tub and the metal round piece. Should I leave that rubber piece on there or take it off and allow the tub and metal piece to touch only or leave the rubber piece between?

If I leave the rubber place between the tub and the round metal drain piece, do I use silicone or plumber's putty?

If I remove the rubber piece and attach the round metal drain piece to the tub, do I use silicone or plumber's putty?

Thanks so much!

Just leave it there. That's what forms a seal between the tub and the tub arm, and keeps you from chipping the tub if it's cast or steel. Use plumbers putty, and make sure that when you start to tighten it down, it threads on easily, otherwise you take a chance on cross threading it.

If it's sealing correctly you should see plumber's putty oozing out all around the drain.

The best way to apply the plumber's putty is to roll it out between your hands and make like a 3/8" snake, and then wrap that around the drain.
