I currently have an eagle 9500 with LORAN-c. Loran is giving nothing but trouble and I think its time to go for GPS. It's been around long enough that I should change over.
Does anyone have any opinions good or bad on what unit or 2 units to replace this with.
I love the plotter feature so a plotter on the new unit would be a requirement. Not sure I would need mapping. I don't think I would use it, but I have never had it so I don't know. This would be for fishing and portable is not a requirement.

Most of what I have seen is a sonar on the boat then a GPS positioner portable to record when you find fish. The GPS will put you back to the same spot then the sonar on the boat will put you on the fish in that spot.

A good electronic screen sonar with recal and speed and detail zoom control should give you fair chance of identifying fish, fish number and size. Then location of those fish marked per depth and surrounding structure should lead you to type of fish marked on the screen. Once you find fish say in middle of the lake on a hump or structure or drop off then you can mark and record that location on your hand held GPS for future use to find that hump again.

This way the good quality hand held GPS can be used with other outdoor activities.

Best I have
