Is there a limit to the number of steps in a staircase? I have an outside set of steps leading to a second floor entry and deck. I think there are 13 steps, then a short landing, then 2 more steps. The way this is done is not optimal, and the headroom is rather low near a few steps (steps don't match angle of roof). I can make this better, but may need to increase the number of steps in that first flight. Is this allowed?

Also, is there a limitation as to the angle of steps (or an optimal angle)? I'd like them to be less steep, and there seem to be conventions of rise to run. Are there code limits to the rise/run ratio or the depth of a run?

Angle may be as much as veritcle [straight up].

Maximum length of stairs between floors or landings is 12'

Minimum head room is 6 feet 6 inches.

Minimum width is 30"

Maximum riser is 7 3/4"

Maximum difference of any riser in a set of stairs is 3/8" variable allowed.

Minimum tread is 10"

Sorry about the delay but I have been very busy this summer on the job and painting the outside of one of my duplex rentals. [2 story 3 color] I was asked by my daughter and girlfriend what collors. I answered {red, green, yellow}, they rinkled their nose and said I was going to repaint it a reasonable color. They jumped in their car to see how terrible it looked. They came back and were happy explaining it looked great but it was really {burgandy, forrest green, carrage red} Yep as I said red green yeller ! Women and their fashion !!!!
