When is the best time to start growing grass seed?

I've always heard fall is typically the best time, but I think anytime that the lawn gets adequate sun and abundant moisture it will grow just fine. Where I'm at, it is almost impossible to start grass mid summer. It's just too hot and the seed dries out too quickly.

I ended up reseeding our front yard last fall after having it dug up when my sewer line calapsed:puke: The seeds germinated in about a week and became lush grass in just over a month. Due to the amount of rain we received right after I finished all the work (and put in a new sidewalk), part of the yard settled. (right were the trench was) So when it warms up and the snow melts I'll have to have some black dirt hauled in and reseed some of the areas. I'll "try" to get the grass started after I know we won't get a hard frost anymore.

Fall is the best time, check local listings for exact timing. You want it to be tall enough that you can mow it 3 times prior to getting a hard frost. The main reason for this is the development of roots. If you seed in the spring it is easier to get it to grow, lots of rain, BUT the issue is you get a lot of shoot growth and very little root growth, as the water is on the surface and easily attainable. so in the summer when it becomes dry the new grass will struggle and you will lose some of it due to heat stress, unless you water as necessary so it survives the dry summer, which in a lot of places this is not possible. Now in the fall mother nature has taught grass and other items to store up for winter, so there is naturally more root growth from the grass seed and you have a nice structure to support shoot growth, and the roots will be in place for the next summer when it makes it through the winter. Again rule of thumb is tall enough to be cut 3 times prior to first heavy frost, that exact time is the guessing game!

The critical conditions for grass seed germination is temperature and moisture. It needs daytime highs between 15 and 20 degrees and daily watering for a week or so until the seeds germinate.

Fall is the ideal time to plant, because the new seed is not stressed by the summer heat and has a long time in the Fall for the roots to develop. Spring can also work well, provided you don't let the new grass get too dry.

Good luck.
