View Full Version : building a half wall

There is a wooden railing between my kitchen and den (the den is one step down). The railing is about seven feet long and is wobbly because it is only attached to a wall on one end and to the floor. I'd like to replace this with a half wall of the same size and, while I've got no problems with the actual construction (I've done quite a bit of framing and drywalling), I'm trying to figure out a way to secure the end away from the wall so it won't wobble.

Originally, I was going to send a post up the ceiling, but this idea was nixed by the wife (it blocks the TV). I was also going to try to open up the floor below to secure the end post below, but there is a lot of plumbing and wiring on the joist below, so I've no where to fasten it. The only other thing I was thinking of was to try and stiffen up the wall by putting sheets of plywood on each side and attach the drywall to them. At least this might limit cracking later from a little wobble.

I believe I'm stuck with some wobble, but I hope there is some ingenious trick of the trade that I'm not aware of.

Any ideas?

I stiffened the free end of the 1/2 wall by bolting large 8" x 1" corner braces on the two studs at the far end and lag-screwing them into the floor, through the bottom plate and into the sub-floor. Where the alignment was right, lag-screws were into the joist below.

Corner braces were similar to this:
