Hi
what are the best / proper steps to take when redoing a basement room.
I have removed the insulation between the joist (mold), the wall board will be comming down along with the insulation which will leave me with just the studs. On 2 walls there are 2x3 studs??????, the other walls have 2x4s?????.
I plan to rip them down to the foundation and stat fresh.
Owens corning came last night with there $15 to 20 thousand price tag. (Ha)
So what are the proper steps needed to ensure a dry / warm and mold free basement?

Thanks
Bob

Where were the places that you saw mold? More than one place?

Any moldy areas noticeably wet as well?

There was about a inch of blackness in the kraft face insulation, and the walls had slight mold behined the electric wall mounted heaters. The wall are going to be replaces because of the rough housing that took place in the family room

From what you wrote you said you would be starting from scratch, so here is a couple of things to remember.

All wood in contact with the floor and or walls must be pressure treated.
If there is a vapor barrier on the exterior side of the basement wall then you must not put on on the inside, if there is not one on the exterior then you must put one on the interior (usually insulation that it faced is ok) Make sure the insulation does not come in contact with the block/brick/rock basement wall.
If there is mold, was there any water ? if so then naturally the water penetration would need to be addressed (regrading, gutters, down spouts etc...) if there was no water then you may well have to look at dehumidifing the basement to keep the moisture level down.

Hi

What would you consider a vapor barrier on the outside?

Thanks

an external vapor barrier is usually a tar based product applied to the exterior walls of a basement "before" back filling. If your home is an older home then it may well not have it.
Dig down a foot or so beside the wall on the outside and see if you can see any sealer applied to the wall (usually black). If you see just plain old blocks or brick then it's a good bet you don't have an exterior vapor barrier.
