I opened up my joint compound and found what appears to be mold/mildew. I scraped it off of the top and used the rest. This container is a couple of months old and I keep it in the basement which is "dry". Why does the compound support this growth and what can I do to keep it from happening again?

Thanks for any insight!

United States Gypsum don't really mold too much. I've had plus 3 that I've used for texturing that has been in a covered bucket for 3 years no mold.

I've also had Beadex which sucks and molds in a short period of time. Stinks like crazy and doesn't work near as well as the USG products.

A damp basement will have no affect on a covered bucket of mud. It's in thejoint compound itself.
