computer problems

my computers performance has gotten worse. My anti virus quit working, I couldnt get my email to work, I cant add or delete programs, I no longer get into my help section or system restore, I cant get on the internet now. So, Im thinking I'll just put the recovery disk in and get my factory settings back. It says "recovery disk error contact compact technical support." It wont even run. Anybody got any ideas?
