I have a Bostitch N88RH pneumatic nailer that began malfunctioning today, right in the middle of a major home improvement project. The nailer repeatedly "fires" when I attach the compressor hose (I never have nails in the chamber when I attach the hose). It sounds like a machine gun and won't stop until I disconnect the hose. The compressor pressure is normal (100 psi). Yes, I always put a few drops of Bostitch nailer oil in the air inlet every day that I use it.

I am a DIY-er, but have used the nailer quite a bit during the past year or so on a big deck project. My guess is that it may be the trigger valve, or perhaps something related to the safety mechanism, but I've never repaired a nailer before and don't want to but a bunch of repair parts without knowing what might be wrong. I am quite mechanically inclined, so tearing into something like this doesn't bother me...

Any advice would be appreciated!!

I'm no expert in tool repair, but I have fixed air nailers before. I would guess that there is something causing the safety mechanism to stick. It might help to throughly clean that assembly with compressed air or a damp cloth. Another possibility is that the linkage for that safety mechanism is bent, causing it to stick. If that fails, I would check into some sort of rebuild kit. There are many seals and gaskets that go bad in these things, and need to be replaced once in a while, especially with heavier use. If that fails, you may need a new trigger assembly.

Just some ideas...
