View Full Version : Low Oil Pressure when warmed up

Ok. My bird has been running fine for the last few months except for it's decreasing oil pressure. Now I can smell oil from under the hood near the back passenger side of the engine. Not a cooking smell, just a faint whiff after the car is warmed up. But I can't see any leak! When the engine first starts the oil pressure is fine, at the midrange of my gauge. Once the engine is warmed up, it drops to just barely above the redline (low, low mark). This happens if I am running at highway speeds or at idle once the engine is warm. I also noticed that the oil pressure reading stays at close to midrange if I hit the highway shortly after I start the car. But once the engine temp gets to midrange the oil pressure drops accordingly. Since I do smell oil I am assuming this is due to either a. a leaky valve cover gasket, but I see no oil on top of either cover or b. which I hope it ain't but I guess it's the only other possibility, being a leaky head gasket?? The pressure level has been gradually dropping over the years and I replaced my valve head cover gaskets a few times to see if that was the cause but it never made any difference. except this time I'm smelling the oil.. Any ideas?? Thanks...

Ok. Put my car up on the rack and saw oil leaking from behind the crankshaft harmonic balancer. Would this explain my low oil pressure gauge reading? Replacing the front seal is a must, but should I also replace anything else? Like the bearings? or have them drop the oil pan, replace the oil pump or clean the oil pump pick up. Any suggestions??
