A open letter to the board... (and to Don, our Admin)

I am withdrawing my offer to help with admin/moderation/spam control this board as of now.

Spam is starting to really take over. I currently have 96 unread posts. Of those 22 are clearly spam (per the topic line), 3 of those have been moved to the spam room. This does not include the spammers who are replying to posts. Our main spammer on here has 66 posts and is 2 posts away from having more posts then our Admin account! (click on members list, then click once on the posts header and it will show you how many posts everyone has.. 30 users listed per page). There are currently 196 posts in the spam room since it was started 16 months ago (I do not question the reasoning behind keeping them, but the numbers do not lie). There are many posts that should ahve been put there that havent, so that number is very low.

I'll bet you any bridge in the country that the person behind Jqyshoes, knows or has reffered many of our other spammers who have recently popped up and are racking up posts. These are not our random spammers. They have friends , they network, and make money referring other's. It is a big business.

Nothing is being done about it. Several of us have offered to volunteer for several months now, our requests go unknowleged. 6 of us at one time had the power to remove spam. Our rights were taken away without comment. Messages asking why went unanswered. By the criteria you origionally set up , 16 of us would now have spam moving powers.

I have not decided if I am going to continue as a 'regular' member of this board or not. Future action on the spam problem will determine that. I am gone from home over 11 hours a day for work. I do spend alot of time on this board in the evenings, however I dont have the time to sort through posts.

Don, I know you have other things going on that are seemingly more important then this board (your last login was Jan 10th). This board has grown by leaps and bounds. Yea there are fancier boards out there. But this one has been one of the friendliest. I felt as if Ive gotten to know quite a few people on here (some too well). Newcomers dont seem afraid to post "simple" questions on here. We are not bombarded with ads and popups when we come here. People are openingly willing to volunteer their time here. I dont feel the same about other boards. THis board has been unique. Please do something with this board before it dies and is forgotten.

Thanks

T -- Member since 2002

It woud also be nice if people don't bump a thread to remove Spam from the 1st page of index. It just makes more "spam" and another pointless post to read

Mr. T,

I stand behind what you say 100%.

Something needs to be done like, last October.

For the sake of this place, I could still be moderator if my help is wanted.

HH, I don't come here to buy that crap either. How many customers do they get this way?

AllenJ has been posting - just to bring any thread to the top to get rid of Spam as 1st post - I guess
Every time I look at new posts Ihave to read one of his bump posts

I am finding the spam increasingly annoying. I would like to know what measures could be taken to remove spammers. I participate in another forum called Sawmill Creek, and they do not seem to have a problem with spam. I wonder if our administrators could gather some tips from them??? One thing they do differently is that they require the use of user's real names - don't know if that makes any difference. I think moderators have to approve new members - to prevent spam and abuse.

If it's a matter of a need for volunteers, I would be happy to assist as a moderator.

If it's a matter of money to solve the problem, then the members should know the need.

I'm not at the point of questioning my membership here, but I sure hope the problem gets better instead of worse. In fact the spam problem seems to be increasing at an exponential rate.

Proud member since January 2004.

How does the ad revenue work? If I click on ads does that generate revenue or is it the number of users who visit this site.
I would be glad to click several ads everytime I visit if that would help ad revenue.

There is a number of things going on, only some I am able to mention.

I am currently on a 6 country world vacation, I am currently in Manila, philippines, leaving for southern leyte (province in philippines) in the morning where I will likely have very limited access to internet. Back home in canada at the end of the month.

http://www.travelwithadisability.com/dkerr/

where I have pictures of the trip, I am about a week behind on it, currently have pictures on there up to March 5. I will expand the site to a full blown one as I have time after my return to Canada. I have forums installed there, but haven't had time to post much on during the trip. Although I have never submitted anything to the search engines, I have had some spam messages on there, don't know how it was found. Will restrict posting to registered members only when it is set up more complete.

Also I hae spent some time setting up a website for warren who is running for indiana senate.

http://www.warrengoodrichforindianasenate.com/

hope that those of you that are in a position to vote in that area will support him.

This is a good site, so don't give up on it, we have enough regulars, that we know the questions will be answered even when we are busy with other things.

And other things are in the works.

Don

I'm glad that you haven't abandoned us! I am committed to this site and would like to do anything I can to ensure it's continued success.

Can you:

1. Let us know if contributions are required;

2. Would you be willing to appoint more moderators to help with spam-removal, etc. There appear to be several willing to put in time in this capacity, including myself, if it would help;

It sounds like you are having a great trip. We look forward to you 'catching up' when you get back to town.

Steve

Wow! kumusta, wala ba tayo diyan. ;)

Happy to hear the good news (WG and yourself)!Don, stop trying to do it all on your own. We have people here willing to help.

Now to mention more on the Philippines. My wife is from the philippines. Do you speak Tagalog? Kailangang umalis na ako ngayon.

PS: Tell WG, Good Luck, and hope he wins!

No I can't speak tagalog

Quite a culture shock visiting the philippines, I was in manila back in 1983, but this is the first time I have been to my wife's home province, southern Leyte, quite different than manila.

Amazing I could build a modern house there, have hired people to cook, clean, drive me around and do anything I want, even have water front property, and still live off a 1/5 or less of my current salary, and be the wealthest person in the area. Might consider it as a winter home at retirement.

My wife is also from the philippines (Olongapo). Heck, I only speak a little Tagalog--seeing that she's not helping me learn.

Hey Don,
Seeing that we have something in common, and I've been on this site since day one, I want my title changed!!! New title should read: Admin:)

What about "Tagalog Admin" as a title, Ohm:D
