First, my attic is framed with trusses, 24" OC. The existing access is through the closet ceiling. I want to add pull down stairs in the hall but this would require cutting the bottom chord on at least one truss. I know this is not a good idea to do but wondering if it is possible. The hall is about 3' wide and the cut truss would be anchored to the top plate on each side before I cut it. This would prevent it from spreading, no?
Can this be done? What framing would I need to do besides what is needed to install the stairs?
Second, the basement stairs have 3 stringers. About haflway down each stringer is supported by a 2x4 that is nailed to a sill plate on the floor. I want to replace at least the middle support with a header and ideally the support on one side to make storage more convenient. I was thinking I could hang the outside stringer from the joist overhead with threaded rod and then run a doubled 2x4 or 2x6 header across to support the middle stringer.
thanks for any comments.
