View Full Version : Range hood lighting

We're preparing for a kitchen remodel and have an old "passive" ventilation range hood we want to retrofit. Inline fans installed in duct are readily available, but I'm having trouble figuring out about lighting under the hood.
----
QUESTION 1: Does the IRC specify any rules for fixtures directly above cooking surfaces?

Commercial kitchens have rules (code or health dept, I'm not sure) about the AMOUNT of light and glass "shielded" for breakage. What about residential applications?
----
QUESTION 2: If there are requirements, who manufactures or sells these fixtures?

We would prefer smaller fixtures, which generally seem to be halogen, though incandescent would be good.
----
Thanks to all of you professional who help out us DIYs!

As long as 24" clearance over a cooking range is maintained per IRC rules anything above the 24" high clearance above a range is non fire rated. You could put a wood cabinet above a range without a range hood if the 24" clearance is maintained.

No range hood is required for residential cooking ranges.

Above the 24" clearance above that range you can put any light you wish.

Hope this helps
