Replacing the junk motor on an attic fan,I bought a real motor. Even though it is thermally protected, they called for it to be fused. Is this necessary/code? At the electrical supply house they have inline fuses with crimp on connections. The counter guy claimed that these can be used out in the open, but there is an insulation gap where the wire connects. That doesn't hardly seem right.

Are you sure the manufacturer wasn't using fuse as a generic term for any over current protection? If so, the circuit breaker on that circuit should be good enough to protect the wiring going to the motor. If you are really concerned, you could install a safety switch with fuse holders nearby the fan so long as it is in an easy to access place and not covered with anything (insulation, etc).

That isn't right. Maybe for automotive wiring. One thing that can be done if the motor really needs fused protection is to use a "buss" plug fuse holder like this:

Cheaper than a safety switch.
