View Full Version : Sealing Sheetrock edges? Before mudding?

My sunroom is insulated & I've started to rock
I have my 2nd floor dormer to have rough & fraiming inspection
Then I can insulate & rock upstairs
After all is rocked I'm going to hire someone to do the final mudding
Since the sunroom will be finished shortly I wanted to seal the joints on the drywall to prevent cold air coming in.
Is this a good idea?
Or should that wait until the actual mudding takesplace for a better hold
After the sunroom is rocked I'm going to rip the wall down between sunroom & kitchen. Right now there isn't any heat out there, bt already 10-20 degrees warmer then outside. Yesterday with 46 temp outside & very sunny it went up to 70 out there

The joints of the drywall should have landed on a stud that should have severely slowed down any heat loss. The drywall should have pretty well sealed all you need to seal. I would not pre mud it would cause more work for the drywall finisher.
You are experiencing two heat sourced for that room. One is convection heat loss from that one warm wall. .This will tell you it is good to make that added room warmer but if that much heat is escaping your house through that one warm wall you might want to do an inventory of your heat blanket on those outside walls still exposed to the outside elements.
The secone heat source is what is called a passive solar system. You have stopped most of the air flow in that room then when the sun hits inside the room the sun is heating the elements inside the room creating a warmer room as the heat is released into the room from those elements that were exposed to the heat of the rays of sun.
I would get to the point of being ready for your drywall finisher and create a temporary heat source to warm those walls a day or so before the finisher gets there to add to his ability to do a good job, ease his work load finishing warm wall now and speeding the drying time between his returns for second bedding and sanding to speed his way to having a completed professional job produced for you.
Good Luck

Thanks for the information
I won't do any sealing, I'll wait for the drywall finisher
I do have a window between the Kitchen & sunroom that I can open to allow heat out there. I think once I finish the sheetrock the temp will increase even more.
I may even cut the window out & part of the wall. I can make the wall a 1/2 wall until after the mudding is finished (this will keep my son out). This will allow the room to be heated & also allow me to use the room
I can put plastic over the opening once they start to finish the drywall
That will keep any dust out of the house if they need to sand
With just (3) 60w light bulbs & a 300w Halogen the room actually stays warm on a cloudy day

I have 2 walls done & 1st 4' of the ceiling
1st wall under the beginning of the ceiling is completely done
Due to the windows on the 2nd wall I was able to do all of the wall except the top part (about 10") between the windows & ceiling
Not very sunny out & its been about 55-60 all day
That's without running any of the lights
By finishing these 2 walls I could proceed connecting up on outlet circuit & the lighting circuit. Lights are connected & working, just need to connect the last outlet & that circuit will be complete
