This summer, it was time to pump my septic again. I dug up the tanks as usual, and I decided that while I had them dug up, I would like to have the covers brought up to the surface, so that I don't need to dig them up every other year. I had cast iron collars installed, with cast iron covers. Since this change, I have noticed that I can smell the septic tank when in my back yard and sometimes in the driveway. My system also has one of the "candy-cane" vent pipes. I don't recall ever smelling the system with the old, buried covers.

Any tips on what I can do to get rid of the smell? Can I cover the new caps with something?

You could try weatherstripping around the top of the pipe. Make sure it's thick enough to make full contact with the lid. If you have trouble getting it to stick, try a piece of solid rubber carpet pad, cut to the inside of the lid.
