This is copied from the international codes section.....I realized I posted under the wrong topic:::::::>
On the advice of a home remodeler, I took down a wall which he said was not load bearing. (the wall is now gone) I got up in the attic only to find that the wall, which does not support our gable end roof (these supports I need to fix run parallel to the facade), holds up the ceiling. I have since supported the board in the ceiling with temporary toenailed 2x4s (screwed in to allow removal later).
What size beam would I need to hold up the ceiling? Do I need columns once the beam is in? What type of support does the beam need when mounted to the walls?
The open span is 159 in (that would be the beam length) and the length of the ceiling from the structural side to the missing wall is 142 inches.
Thanks for any help!
Margaret
