Can the wire used to tie all of them together so when 1 goes off they all do be a seperate red wire or does it have to be in romex cable? Thanks for all the help here!! Matt

If this is 120V wiring, you have to use an approved wiring method. Individual conductors that are not in a raceway are not allowed (except for perhaps equipment grounds).

If someone screwed up and ran 14-2 where they should have run 14-3, I think another cable needs to be run.

I've always run 14-3
I also found out that the circuit needed a AFCI breaker protecting it

That's true, only if the smokie is located in the bedroom. If the circuit does not contain any outlets in any bedrooms, then AFCI protection is not needed.
2005 NEC section 210.12(B)

Granted, not many applications for smokie circuits that do not include bedrooms but there are some out there. Since Matt, in his original post, did not indicate where the smokies were, I just thought I would let him know he may not need to spend the money for AFCI protection depending upon the location.
