Took my nine year old nephew out today turkey hunting and harvested his first longbeard eastern turkey. First bird we called in little Sam missed at about 20 yards and thought he was going to cry. Told him that everybody misses so just let it go and we will go find another turkey. He asked me if I ever missed a turkey. Of course I told him no... HA! He did great on the next bird. We located 5 longbeards in a hay field and I got a hen decoy out. Did one series of soft hen yelps and two long beards marched right to the decoy. Neat thing was I whispered to Sam to get his gun up and ready and shoot the bird soon as I told him. Well the birds came in one straight in front at 15 yards and the other at 35 yards and I yelped to get them to put their heads up and said "shoot em Sam". Well he did but instead of shooting the close bird he shot the farthest longbeard. I never dreamed he would shoot the farthest bird. I asked him why did he shoot the bird that was the farthest away and he said he could see it better and it had a longer neck! That was one proud and happy young boy when he went and picked up his bird. Carried it all the way back to the truck, wouldnt have it any other way. It's great to show these youngsters the great outdoors and then watch them in their excitement when they succeed in accomplishing what Sam did today. Anyway here are the pictures of Sam's first turkey.
