This is probably too vague but I am trying to add on 4 more sprinkler heads and junctions of PVC from my existing 3 head system in my backyard. However i'm not sure if there is a rule of thumb or guideline as to how many heads can be on one system. I just don't want major pressure issues etc....

What size pvc pipe are you using, the existing and the new. If you do have a presser problem you could add another solenoid and alternate the timer so they don’t all go at the same time. Some use a high volume of water while others are lower volume it sounds like you are doing large areas. Let us know.

We are using 3/4 inch PVC for old and new however the shut off valve is the old style manual twist on.

You would have no pressure problem putting the additional sprinkler heads on "a new circuit". That is, tee off the line for the new heads upstream of the valve(s) (solenoid or twist) for the existing line(s). Suggestion: Cut the pipe and assemble the parts and test the new line above ground to see if the pressure is adequate to feed the heads. If there isn't enough pressure for all four new heads, you will need to put in two new lines.
You will want to do sprinkler flow rate and sprinkler pattern shape/size calculations so all of the heads operating on one line distribute roughly equal gallons per square yard per hour. These calculations may also force you to install two or more lines each of which is run for a different number of minutes to get the desired amount of water.
