I got a sears mower that has the above mentioned engine in it. Oddly enough at the same time the steering linkage fell apart as I was mowing the engine died. I fixed the linkage and tried to restart..just spun feely. Dug in a bit deeper, exhaust valve is not closing. I need to pull the head. This is a overhead valve engine. I need to remove the valvesprings before I can pull the head off. I dont have any valve spring compressors or such. The valve setup is similar to a automotive valve. has the big *** spring and 2 wedge shaped keepers. Any tips or tricks on getting these apart so I can see how bad the damage is?

A valve spring compressor is not an exspesive tool, and 20 bucks is cheap compared to the fustration you will endure, try to find the reason it is staying open before you remove it, I am all certain that the techumce site has a breakdown of that unit. good luck, if i can be of any further assitance i will.
