I'm repowering my trusty rear engine Snapper with a Briggs 13HP. This one has both rewind start and electric start.

I'm new to electric start and the manual isn't helping me identify the wiring too well. I have my assumptions but I thought I'd throw this out there to any experts that can help me identify the wiring on this engine.

It's a Briggs model: 21A977 Type 0115E1.

I'm assuming the red wire is the alternator charge lead. Not sure what the yellow wires are.

The starter connection is pretty obvious, but there's a black wire coming out between the starter and the muffler. It appears to be connected to the cylinder. I'm assuming it's just a ground wire.

Here's a link to the pics...

If someone could take a look and verify my assumptions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Regards,
Marty

Hello Marty

The two yellows are ac voltage coming to the voltage regulator from the stator to be rectified to dc.

The red is the charge lead and the black is ground as you thought.

What exactly is the purpose of the black ground wire? It's connected to the cylinder head. This engine doesn't have a carburetor solenoid. At least I can't find one. Does this black ground wire take the place of that? Is it a shut off connection? Thanks in advance for your input.

The cylinder head must be grounded for proper ignition. Or something else is grounded to the cylinder head which is always the path back to the negative terminal of the battery.
