i'm currently doing a kitchen renovation in which all the plaster / lathe will be down and came across an issue. here's the scoop. The house is over a hundread yrs old so it may explain a bit of this, but maybe i'm missing something. i've taken the ceiling down and noticed that a fair number of supply lines are running under the joists. the ceiling was acoustic tiles which were adhered to some skip sheathing due to fact that the tiles were smaller than the span of the joists. so it's a pseudo drop ceiling (dropped the thickness of the slats.....~1-2". So there's 1-2" of space between the joists and the former ceiling. This is were a fair number of supply lines have been run. Could I cut these and run them through ceiling joists....essentially bury these up in the ceiling a bit more? of course this isn't easy....they would be running perpendicular to the joists. There aren't any issues with this is there? By the way there's bathroom right above the kitchen.......thus the supply lines. I think what may have occurred is an update occured on the plumbing after an issue and it was easier to drop the ceiling and run the copper lines wherever they wanted too instead of cutting through the joists. any thoughts or issues with getting the copper up in there a bit. thanks!!!!

You could run pex plumbing through bored holes but you are not allowed to notch the bottom side of a spanning lumber such as ceiling joists or floor joists. This is why they dropped the ceiling so you did not compromise the spanning strength of the spanning lumber. Copper lines do not bend like pex plumbing can. Pex plumbing is more like a garden hose. Copper line is hard drawn not allowning much bending to that pipe.

Good Luck
