View Full Version : Venting Question

In my circa 1913 home (built by a plumber) I have what I think is called a drum trap. It serves a bath, toilet and a single sink. In my remodel I am replacing everything, but the tub and toilet stay where they are. The sink moves about 3-4 feet further away. Total bath size is about 10 x 7.

My biggest concern is venting correctly and a trap for the sink. The sink will be furthest away from the main drain and the only vent. The sink right now has an "S" trap. I have read that those are not good because they are very hard to vent correctly. How do I trap a sink that will drain into the floor? The vent, 4 inch, is directly behind the toilet. The tub is about 15 inches away from that.

Any thought or help would be appreciated.

Also, is 1/2 inch supply lines sufficient for a second floor bath?

Thanks again,

John

Well you need a proper nevt for the sink. An 1 1/2 vent is fine for it, and the trap on your sink can be no further then 5 feet away from the vent. if it is not within 5 feet you will need to bring an 1 1/2 dranage pipe up behind the sink, then put a "T" fitting. On the top of the fitting you need to put a "cheater vent" which will alow air to get in, but stops water and smell from getting out. This should sit a few inches about the trap, but it doesnt really effect anything if you cant. its just makes it easier in the future to change anything if need be. off the side of the "t" you will need to put a trap on.

As for the water pipe size, 1/2 will be fine, as long as it is fed by a 3/4 line. So you should run a 3/4 line to the bathroom, then run 1/2 off the 3/4 to your fixtures.
