Hi folks,
I think I'm stuck pretty good this time. Our bathroom sink drain pipe was leaking so I cut out a section to replace it (was leaking after the trap) and discovered what I think is original lead pipe. The stuff is super soft. As I did the replacement I saw or created a lot of other leaks, the pipe was perferated and keeping from leaking by an incredible amount of junk in it. Anyway I thought I was done and I discovered another leak...I'm not sure whatto do about this one, I don't want any bigger of a project and I'm not sure how I'd do it if I had to.

Check out the photo, I have a small leak right at the joint in the copper pipe where I connect with the toilet and main cast iron sewar pipe. Can anyone recommend a good fix that doesn't involve re-doing the toilet and tub and/or plugging in a new piece to the main pipe?

thanks
Mark

That is copper pipe not lead. You need to heat the joint with a torch and take it apart. Then clean with sandpaper or emery cloth both sides and resolder it. If you need instruction on soldering look of 'sweating copper pipe'.

yeah, that's copper...the stuff I took out had to be lead, or aluminum. it was silver and I could bend the 1 1/4" pipe with my bare hands with no effort.

am I going to hurt any of the other joints there when I torch this one? they're all kinda close together. I imagine this big ol pipe will take a crapload of heat before it gives.

the saga continues...

so I heated the T and pulled out the leaky bit. The pipe is cracked so there's no re-using it. I don't have any 1 1/2" copper laying around and it's $91 for 10 feet at the home shop. Is there a way I can take my pvc into the T and seal it with a gasket or something else? is there a less than $100 solution?

thanks

You should be able to find a no hub(Fernco) connector that will joint those two. Go here to find your coupler.
