i'm going to drive a ground rod into the ground within an inch of the house's foundation. i'm concerned there may be a sewer line (a lateral) going to the street from the house. It lines up pretty well and i know it will be fairly close (under 12"). i'm just doing the math in my head (in terms of an 8' ground rod going into the ground and how deep the main stack line is buried. is there code referring to how deep the main stack goes below your basement floor before taking a 90 and traveling to the street? would you ever run a main sewer drain under the house? i know this one is a staight shot to the street.......just curious how deep it might be below the surface?...as well as those other questions. Thanks!

The footing will stick out several inches wider than the foundation. I would not try to put a ground rod that close.

Why sink the gruond rod that close and take a chance? Can't you move the rod another foot or so away? My basement has a sewer pipe that goes through the middle of the wall (is not below the basement floor). I think the only requirement for depth is the frost line, the practical issues of maintaining slope and how low the traps go. The top of the drain pipe could be right under the basement concrete floor.

good idea...and that would be my first choice, but if i went a foot or so away form the line....i would be in the driveway.

the drain is right below the basement floor (as you said), but before it takes a 90 degree to head towards the street it goes down about 12 - 18 inches. i was curious if that was the case for the main stack too.
