View Full Version : Tongue and Groove at Ends?

I think I incorrectly posted this in another section...

I am installing 6" tongue and groove pine flooring over a nice, flat 3/4" plywood subfloor. I'm blind nailing through the tongues. Should I try to route tongues and grooves on the short ends of the boards where they butt into each other, or just let them butt together? And if they just butt together, should I leave a 1/16" gap at the butt, or can I push the ends tightly together?

Thanks for any help!

Most of the expansion found in tongue and groove flooring is in the sides not the ends. If you leave room for swell leave it under the wall trim so it can move in and out from under the baseboard trim. I have not seen a concern of length expansion should be able to butt ends.

The tongue and groove should be cut with the rest of the board. The interlock will pass over the butt ends without loss of strength. Just be sure to scatter your butts from row to row.

Good Luck

Thanks, Wg. That makes sense.
