View Full Version : Pedestal Sink and Through-Floor Plumbing

I'm replacing the fixtures and plumbing in a small
(42 x 51") first-floor half bathroom and want to install a pedestal sink. The problem is that it would be very, very difficult to run the drain pipe into the wall--I really need to run the drain through the floor, but I can't find any examples of this. What I'm wondering is, among other possibilities, is it to code if I install two elbows following the P-trap and bring the drain pipe back to within the confines of the pedestal base and then down through the floor while still within the pedestal?

Thanks for any replies to this or other ideas.

I have a sink in my basement that is similar to what you describe, although it's not a pedestal. The drain goes into the floor pretty much straight down. There is a normal trap, and then another "J" pipe that takes it straight down. So the trap setup is like a loop. This house was built in the 40's, so I don't know for sure that it meets current codes, but I don't see why not.

I don't see why it wouldn't either, Dave. Up here inspection and standards are pretty lax, so for my purposes as long as it functions properly and doesn't create some odd effect that winds up siphoning the water out of the trap that'd be fine with me.

btw, I've never heard of a rule that states how close to the actual drain the trap needs to be. Have you ever heard of one?
