Hello, I hope this post is in the right area...

my water heater's hot surface ignitor failed yesterday. I installed a new HSI today, but the bracket on it is different due to it being a replacement part. Due to the difference in size, the last half inch of the element is actually in the flame. I am writing to ask if this is a bad thing, dangerous, or ok. {I cannot remember if the original element touched the flame...I should have taken note...but...}

Thanks for any responses.

Was the replacement element the required replacement, or did you get something that looked close? If you went to a reputable company and they gave you a replacement for the model # you asked for, I'm sure it is OK. If you went to Home Depot and got something close, you might want to pull it out and get the proper part.

On a side note, when a flame is involved, never go the cheapest route. Spend the extra dollar as your families life might depend on it.

It was the required replacement, cross ref'd in the parts book for my rheem system. I'm just trying to make sure that it's ok to have the HSI element in the flame when the burner comes on...or is it supposed to sit back from the flame?

Thanks for the reply.
