Do I need to have my washing machine on a GFCI protected circuit?

If yes, I can see why.. If not, why not?

Thanks, Mark

Short answer is no. Motorized appliances can often cause nuisance trips of GFCIs and a properly grounded washer does not need GFCI protection. A washer is one of the cord and plug appliances that the NEC says must be grounded.
But if you are lacking a proper ground, then GFCI protection will provide you with some degree of protection from shock.

well said...I was concerned about nuisance trips and I have found its best not to put anything on a GFCI that just doesnt need to be.....Thank you!

I recall reading that the laundry curcuit must be gfci protected with nothing else on that curcuit. I think I read it in NEC book.

Others??? Let me know if I'm wrong for my learning sakes. Thanks!

I should have included this caveat in my above reply: if the laundry receptacle(s) are within six feet of a laundry sink, then they are required to be GFCI protected.

The sink.....of course. That would be the "decider" :tomato:

Thanks for the reminder!!
