I am trying to locate my phone wire and could use any tips or tricks. The phone co. burried it from the road to the house (about 650 feet) and I need to cross it with power to my garage. I would hate to cut it with the trencher as I don't think they went very deep.
Thanks

Call your utility locator service (the call before you dig number). They will mark all utilities on your property for you.
Around here it's the law that you have to do that even if you arent near a known utility. If you dig up something and didnt have utilities marked, you are in big trouble. If you dig up something they missed marking you wont get in trouble.. just make the news if you killed phone or cable service to half the city or took out a gas line :tomato:

This is on my property so the only phone line in question is mine. No gas or anything else burried here it was a corn field a year and a half ago.

phone line from the street upto your network interface box is the phone company's.. they will mark it...
If you are talking something like a phone line from your house to a outbuilding. That's yours and depending of the makeup of it, they may not be able to locate it with their equipment. Some people will find them for you though if you ask them and their equipment can detect it.
We had our phone line through the yard replaced a few years ago. Last time I had utils marked, they found the new line and the old abandoned line which was just cut at both ends.
