View Full Version : What is this small hose running from furnace to laundry tub?

I have a small (1/2 inch) clear plastic tube running from a box attached to the furnace to my laundry tub. I thought it was to clear the condensation from the central air conditioner, but it has been delivering water off-and-on even in the winter. It appears to be attached to a small pump, though I have never witnessed the pump turning on. I just notice it dripping into the laundry sink once in a while. I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea why it's there and what it's for? I ask because my other house doesn't have anything like it. Mostly I'm curious.
Thanks!

Sounds like it may be the overflow to a humidifier circuit.

It is a condensation pump.
I have the same thing, but my tube runs into the same pipe that the washer drains into which is a little better.
Mine runs all year too. I dont think its a big deal.
Actually had to replace it when I bought the house, couldnt figure out why i had water leaking from the furnace. At that point i had zero home ownership knowledge.
Bottom line is...without it you my have a small flood on your hands. I would consider moving where it drains to though. Looks better.:bath:

Useful info
Condensation Pump
1525
Air conditioners and high-efficiency furnaces have a water drain on them, as water is collected while they operate. This water drains out a tube to your floor drain. But what if you don't have a floor drain? Then you can use this condensate pump to run the drain tube anywhere you like, such as in a sink, or into a drain pipe. This condensate pump attaches next to the furnace or air handler, where it collects the water. You connect a 3/8" drain tube to the pump, and run it where ever you like, including veritically overhead, as it pumps the water against gravity. An automatic float-switch turns it on periodically to empty the drain water

Cool, thanks! That pump is exactly what we have. I will be moving the laundry tub and giving the washer its own drain... I'll be sure to give this little tube a comfy inconspicuous spot as well :-)
