Hi all,

About a year ago I decided to go from regular salt in my softner to Potassium pellets. I think that would have worked ok, but I guess I over filled the unit and now I see a solid block of potassium in the bottom of the of softner tank. I have tried to break it up, but its a fricken bear to bust off even a portion of it. I don't think the water is the same anymore, so I am guessing its not regereating correctly because of this bridge. Do you guys think this will desolve or do I need to disconnect it and find a way to bust all that potassium up from down there?

Thoughts?

Take all of the loose salt out of the tank that you can. Then add hot water to dissolve the rock hard stuff and use something with a dull point to break it up in pieces and throw it away. You need 4 gallons of water in the tank when you add the salt back into the tank. Wait two hours and do a manual regeneration.

I suggest solar crystal salt instead of potassium or pellets.

Well, I tried to break up the potassium as best I could (arm wasn't long enough) with a screw driver and then a broom along with hot water being poured in there. The stuff was just rock solid and not budging after an hour. I then decided to tear the whole thing apart and get back to basics.

I removed it from the input/output water lines. Removed the electronics head from the brine tank. Pulled the float assembly tube, then laid the whole unit on its side and gently tapped the potassium until it broke away. After I got it all removed, I thoroughly flushed the whole tank out and re-assembled everything. Re-installed the brine tank, then the float assembly, head and back to the water inputs. Allowed the brine tank to refill and about 8 hours later did a Re-Gen. Looks like we are back on track.

This time I only added ONE 40lbs. bag of potassium to the system, not 3.
