You may want to delete your duplicate post....
First check the obvious.. are you bypsed? If 3 valves, are they set right?
Have you observed the unit operate? Does it change sounds as it cycles? Does water flow out the drain when it should, does the brine tank fill/drain when it should? Got a salt bridge?
Do you recall doing anything to the system (add salt/ect, plumbing work in the house ect.) about the time it died?
What is the age of your unit? How bad is your water before treatment (hardness/iron?)
On a well or city water? Any prefilter?
May want to post the make and model.. I'm not a softener expert, but others in here are.

Check for loose brine line connections. That would allow the unit to suck air instead of heavy salt brine. A blocked/kinked drain line, blocked injector, injector throat or screen can cause no salt brine draw which will prevent regeneration of the resin although the unit goes through all the regeneration like normal.
