Bass excellent and big also crappie excellent and big. Just got back from bass fishing trip on Lake Ozark. Went down to fish 1st bass tournament of the year on April 4th. Many limits caught with lots of 5 lb fish brought to the scales. Was out Friday and Saturday fishing and caught 2 largemouths over 6lbs and several from 2 to 4 1/2 lbs. Water temp is about 52 degres in the mornings and gets up to about 54 or 55 around 2:00 pm. Spinnerbaits and jig and pig are really catching fish on the osage arm of the lake. The water clarity there is stained to dingy. Fish are on the main lake points with chunk rock. Better fish are hitting the jig around 6 to 8 feet deep. Spinnerbait is catching the most but not as big for the most part. Chartruese has been the best color for spinnerbaits and black and blue for jigs. The Gravois, Glaize, and Niangua arms are clear and there is a super bite going on suspending rogues and lucky craft pointer 100's. Many big fish being caught on these baits. I caught the big bass of the tournament (6.96lbs) with only 10 minutes left before weigh in. Just one of those things that goes right I guess. She hit a black and blue jig in about 6 feet of water on a main lake point. We had five fish that weighed 18.74lbs. The winning stringer was 6 fish (tournament limit) that weighed 24.43 lbs. Thats a 4 pound average. Our stringer put us in 4 place. The winners caught their fish on spinnerbaits at the 65 mile marker around bolger creek, the tournament started at the 11 mile mark so they ran a good distance but said water was 58 degrees where they fished.
Crappie fishing is really hot in the upper osage in the area where bass tournament was won. Black and chartruese tube jigs are working great. Fish are averaging 13 to 14 inches and a little over 1 lb. average. They are very shallow 1 to 3 feet deep. Water is dingy. Pesci disc shows crappie are going to spawn around 2 feet deep or a little less if this water color holds. Many limits are being caught. We are about 2 weeks from bass spawn and 4 weeks from crappie spawn starts. Going to Truman lake next will post report in a few weeks......RL
