Any suggestions on bringing basic contractor installed basement stairs up to code? After remodeling the basement, I realized that simply adding the risers to the existing stairs was not the best route to take. The treads are not deep enough, and you can tell when you walk up or down the stairs that they are not "Correct".

Can I screw a two by two to the front of each tread to add the correct depth? I believe the current tread is a 2x10, or is it a 2x8? It is whatever is installed by the builder to an unfinished basement. There were no risers.

Basically, what is the best way to redo these stairs?

Thanks for your input.....

Treads are to be 10" from face of riser whether riser is there or not.

Risers are not required to be closed.

You may add a 3/4" nose to your steps but not any more. More would break off causing a risk of falling.

maximum rise per code is 7 3/4"

No step may have a difference of rise more than 3/8" comparing all steps top to bottom.

Hope this helps
