I've got flat odd shaped laminated surfaced counter with a drop-in gas cook top-no curves or rounded corners..
It will be difficult to make another--can I laminate over the old? thanks..

First off, I'm not a pro laminate guy but have made a couple of lam countertops.
Yes you can laminate over laminate. You just need to sand it and break up any sheen and clean it real well, I would recomend alcohol to remove oils. It actually makes a pretty good surface.
The devil is definitley in the details. What kind of backsplash do you have, Can you fit a router on all four sides. What kind of edge trim do you have. etc.
On the counters I have built. I build the substrate, make my cutouts for sinks and such, apply the laminate oversized, come back with a router and trim back the excess. THEN i move the counter into position against a wall and secure it to the cabinets.
I think you will have to pull the stove out so that the lip of the stove overlaps the lam underneath.
If you cant unfasten your top I suppose you could make careful measurements and cut the lam to fit in the space you have, but you will have unfinished edges anywhere the counter meets a wall or obstruction. this would have to covered with backsplash or trim.

Thanks Bob....My backsplash is square and the top fits into a 5' alcove so all I have to worry about is the back and front...I can get to all sides with a router, once I take the counter off..no problem..I do have to get a bit suitable for the edges, though....
Thanks again...I thought I could glue it down, but a little assurance doesn't hurt! peace...Off the Lowes again! :driver:
